How to Safely Dilute Essential Oils

You may have heard that essential oils need to be diluted before using topically, but how do you do that exactly? Any why? Pure essential oils are highly concentrated products that can irritate and even burn your skin when applied directly. For safe usage, we recommend always diluting essentials oil with a carrier oil. Some common carrier oils you may already have around the house include Almond, Coconut, Jojoba, or Olive Oil.

Common Carrier Oils

Common Carrier Oils:

Almond oil
Coconut oil
Jojoba oil
Olive oil

A 2% essential oil dilution is generally considered a safe guideline for topical application of essential oils on adults. Use the formulas in the chart below to make your 2% mixture.

Recipe:

Safe Essential Oil Dilution

2% Essential Oil Dilution:

12 drops of essential oil + 1 ounce of carrier oil

6 drops of essential oil + 1 tablespoon of carrier oil

2 drops of essential oil + 1 teaspoon of carrier oil

Instructions:

Combine your essential oil and carrier oil mixture in a glass jar or container and mix thoroughly until the oils are indistinguishable from one another. Voila! That’s it! You are ready for your bath, massage or other application.

Regardless of the formula you choose to use, if you experience any signs of skin irritation, such as redness or burning, stop application immediately and wash the affected area with a gentle soap. Never take essential oils internally and keep all essential oils, even diluted ones, away from pets and children.
